Proxy Service

About Proxy Service

The Becker Medical Library Proxy Server provides access to the Library’s online medical literature sources for individuals accessing the web via an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than the Washington University network.

Users who connect to the internet via DSL, cable modem, or an ISP other than the the medicine modem bank or a WUSM Citrix farm must use the Medical Library Proxy server so online journal vendors can identify them as belonging to the Washington University School of Medicine community.

Accounts are available ONLY for faculty, staff and students of Washington University School of Medicine. Graduate students in Biomedical Engineering are eligible for accounts. BJC and Danforth campus faculty, staff and students other than BME will not be given proxy server accounts unless they hold joint appointments or are also students in the School of Medicine.

The cost of a proxy account for faculty and staff is $25/fiscal year. Student accounts are free. There is no proration when accounts are requested part way through a fiscal year. Refunds will not be given for accounts cancelled during a fiscal year. You may charge your Washington University departmental account or pay by personal check. Credit cards are not accepted.

Requesting a Proxy Account

All students in the programs of the School of Medicine have proxy accounts. Access is via your network username and password. Students on the Medical Campus and distance PT Ph.D. students who do not have network accounts may request an account online by clicking here. You will be notified by MSCITS when your account is ready.

Faculty and Staff accounts may be requested via the web by clicking here. (This link can only be accessed from the WU or BJC network.) You will receive an email with your login information within three working days after submitting the form.

How To Use the Proxy Service

Once you have your username and password, simply follow the steps below:

  1. Select Logon to Proxy from the Library’s home page or go to http://beckerproxy.wustl.edu/. (Please Bookmark or add this link to your Favorites.)
  2. You will be prompted to Login.
  3. Enter your username and password and click Login.
    1. Students (Medical, HAP, OT, PT, GEMS, PACS) – Use your network username and password.
    2. All other users – use your proxy account username and password.

Once logged in you will be redirected to the Becker home page. As long as you follow links from there your connection will be proxied. This includes using PubMed, linking to full text journals and other resources.

This service does not require you to change your browser settings.

If you type in a new URL in the browser’s address box you will leave the proxy service. Even if you religiously follow only links from one page to another you MAY find that you can’t get to some sites. Not all web sites are proxied. If you find there are sites that you cannot access – especially if they are electronic resources that you would get through the library – please let us know using the blue “Contact Us” button on the left side of the library’s web pages or click here.

Wireless Access in the Library

Wireless access is available throughout the Becker Medical Library.

Wireless access is available to both the secure and open networks. Secure wireless access requires a wireless account. Users should request an account and instructions for setting up their computers for secure wireless access from their helpdesk. All Washington University School of Medicine students are eligible for free wireless accounts. To request an account, fill out the Student Account Request Form. Non-students should submit the MSCITS Wireless Access Account request form.

Guests in the medical library can access the open wireless network if their computers have built in or added wireless network capability. They must set-up the wireless network as the address is not broadcast.

Wired Access

Library users can connect a personal laptop to a network patch cable for wired access at three locations in the computer cluster east of the former Reference Desk on the 1st floor of the Library. This will give the user access to the internet but will not log him/her onto the University network or provide access to other University computing resources or printers. Library resources are available using a wired connection with a personal laptop.
