Anatomy

This guide to anatomy resources on the Internet aims to provide a selection of sites primarily for teaching and learning purposes on the medical school level. The list will often change, since there is an ever growing number of anatomy websites available, which apply fast developing technologies. If you have questions, please contact the guide editor. Shanfu Yan, our Becker Library intern (2007), was co-editor of this guide.

Cumulative Lists of Resources

Anatomy Atlases
Anatomy Atlases is a digital library of anatomy information.
Karolinska Institutet, Sweden
Images, vocabulary, internet workshops, research projects, teaching resources and links to other worldwide institutes.

Interactive Atlases

Brain
Content: 2-D and 3-D views of the brain from cadaver sections, MRI scans, and computer reconstructions.
Knee
Content: 2-D and 3-D views of the knee from cadaver sections, MRI scans, and computer reconstructions.
Neuroanatomy
Content: Neuroanatomy Interactive Syllabus. This syllabus uses the images in the Neuroanatomy Atlas above, and many others. It is organized into functional chapters suitable as a laboratory guide, with an instructive caption accompanying each image. It contains 3-D computer graphic reconstructions of brain material; MRI scans; tissue sections, some enhanced with pathways; gross brain specimens and dissections; and summary drawings. Chapters include Topography and Development, Vessels and Ventricles, Spinal Cord, Brainstem and Cranial Nerves, Sensory and Motor Systems, Cerebellum and Basal Ganglia, Eye Movements, Hypothalamus and Limbic System, Cortical Connections, and Forebrain and MRI Scan Serial Sections.
Thoracic Viscera
Content: 3-D views of thoracic organs reconstructed from 1 mm cryosections of a cadaver specimen provided by Wolfgang Rauschning.
Visible Body
Argosy Publishing's Visible Body is a comprehensive human anatomy visualization tool that includes over 1,700 anatomical structures, including all major organs and systems of the human body. This entirely Web-delivered application offers an unparalleled understanding of the human body and features a fully interactive 3D human body model. Site requires users to register (free).

Medical Images on the Web

Medical Images (University of Utah School of Medicine)
A comprehensive Web site that offers numerous sites featuring images about General Health Sciences, Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Neuroanatomy, etc.

Regional Anatomies

Anatomy Modules (University of Washington Department of Radiology)
Anatomy modules of normal knee, distal thigh, temporomandibular joint, skeleton, and muscles are available at this moment.
Atlases of the Brain (University of Utah)
This site includes images of the coronal brain, brain stem & spinal cord, MRI axial, MRI Coronal and MRI sagittal. It also has Self-quiz for learners.
BrainMaps
BrainMaps.org is an interactive zoomable high-resolution digital brain atlas and virtual microscope that is based on over 15 million megapixels of scanned images of serial sections of both primate and non-primate brains and that is integrated with a high-speed database for querying and retrieving data about brain structure and function over the internet. Currently featured are complete brain atlas datasets for various species, including Macaca mulatta, Chlorocebus aethiops, Felis catus, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, and Tyto alba.

The Visible Human Project

A Guided Tour of the Visible Human
The Visible Human Project has generated over 18000 digitized sections of the human body. This introduction and tour uses images and animals from the project to teach key concepts in human anatomy.
Normal Anatomy Tutorial
A set of Visible Human Project images demonstrates sectional anatomy of the human body. It also has Anatomy Quizzes.
Project Overview at U.S. National Library of Medicine
The Visible Human Project is an outgrowth of the NLM's 1986 Long-Range Plan. It is the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male and female human bodies. The long-term goal of this Project is to produce a system of knowledge structures that will transparently link visual knowledge forms to symbolic knowledge formats such as the names of body parts.
The Stanford Visible Female
This is a site about the human female pelvis from Lucy?s paleo-anthropological origins to 3D computer models in medical education. It?s an academic project sponsored by the Division of Anatomy and the Stanford University Medical Media and Information Technologies (SUMMIT).
