License Agreements

Evidence of Transfer License agreement granted for use of intellectual property generated by the research study.

A license is defined by Washington University as a contract which awards to a party other than the owner(s) of the intellectual property the right to make, use, sell or import products or services based on the owner’s intellectual property. If an output generated by a research study can be used or applied in future research, a license for use of the output by another organization or investigator can be issued to allow for use by organizations or researchers.

Assessment

Documentation by research study investigators of license agreements executed is recommended for tracking of knowledge transfer.

Another option is to check with the campus office responsible for management of technology transfer or development to obtain information on license agreements. For example, the office at Washington University that handles technology transfer matters and licenses is the Office of Technology Management.
