Documentation of OHTS presentations at national and international conferences |
Conference abstracts in the form of papers or posters presented at meetings or conferences or participating in panel discussions are common ways of disseminating the preliminary results of a research study and often precede publication in a journal article. Meetings and conferences are usually held by professional organizations devoted to a specialized area of medicine or research. Some conference abstracts are published, others are not.
For example, the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS) tracked abstracts related to the research study presented at national and international conferences and also posted the abstracts on the OHTS website.
Assessment
Documentation by research study investigators of conference abstracts (papers or posters) and participation in panel discussions is recommended for tracking of research output.
If further documentation is needed, a starting point for location of abstracts and panel discussions is the website of the meeting or conference organizer. For example, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) offers an Annual Meeting Abstract Search feature on the ARVO website that allows for searching of ARVO meeting abstracts from 1962 to the present.
