The Family Resource Center (FRC) at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is a pediatric health information library with consumer-friendly resources for families and the community. By offering families the opportunity to learn about their child’s health condition, the FRC enables them to make well-informed decisions and become full partners with their child’s health care team.

The FRC opened in 1999 and is currently overseen by Kimberly Crosby, RN. With a staff of pediatric nurses and a librarian from the Becker Library, families receive both up to date information and personalized service.

The FRC is open to the public and customer service is a high priority. All services are designed with convenience in mind. Clients may borrow materials from the library or use the business center services: computer, fax, copier, laptop hook ups, etc. For families or caregivers who have specific questions about their child’s health, a customized packet of information can be sent to their home or delivered to their child’s bedside. All services are free of charge.

The FRC has materials on topics ranging from asthma and diabetes to family life issues and safety. The collection includes material appropriate for children, teens and adults and addresses literacy issues as well. Books, brochures, DVDs and consumer health databases are all available in the FRC.

The Rothschild Medical Library is administered by the Health Information Management department of Barnes Jewish Hospital, and is staffed by Reka Kozak, a librarian from the Health Information Resources department of the Becker Medical Library. Located on the first floor of the Steinberg Building (next to the Center for Advanced Medicine), the library was named after Sydney Rothschild for his many years of distinguished service on the Hospital Board before his death in 1930.

The physical facilities of Rothschild Library include a reading room, a photocopy room and a small stack area which houses back issues of journals. The reading room houses a small reference book collection, current printed issues of major medical journals and five computers for public use.

Four of the computers in the reading area are connected to the Washington University Medical School (WUSM) network and provide direct access to the Becker Library’s enormous collection of electronic journals and databases. Users can search databases, print articles from more than 1,900 full-text journals, print from a core collection of full-text text books, navigate the Internet, or check their e-mail. A separate computer workstation is reserved for word processing.

The librarian is available to perform reference services including mediated searches and database training, along with searches for patient education information. Free use of the telephone, fax machine and copy machine are also available. Rothschild Library is open and accessible to all hospital and WUSM employees, staff, students, as well as to patients and their families.
