A brass plaque on the base of the frame reads: “W. MCKIM MARRIOTT, M.D.” A possible artist’s mark appears on the lower left corner of the portrait. Marriott was professor and head of pediatrics, 1917-1936, and dean of the School of Medicine, 1923-1936. Marriott was among the first to apply a basic scientific discipline (biochemistry) to this clinical field. As dean, he administered the school through years of important expansion in facilities for clinical research. Donation of the Marriott Memorial Fund Committee. The portrait was commissioned in 1937 and dedicated at a memorial service in Marriott’s honor held at the hospital 23 November 1937. Records of the memorial committee fund indicate that a sum of $100 was paid to portrait artist Deibel.
