American Academy of Neurology Collection
Archives and Library Collection
Since 1989, the American Academy of Neurology has sponsored two collections pertaining to the history of the neurosciences at the Bernard Becker Medical Library of Washington University.
In that year, the Executive Board of the Academy voted to deposit inactive organizational records of permanent value in the Library. This Academy Archives collection has since grown to encompass nineteen series of files. These files document the founding of the specialty society in 1948, its principal functions, and early leadership. The archives includes annual meeting records and photographs from the Academy’s formative years.
In 1996, the society’s Library Committee established the American Academy of Neurology Library Collection at Washington University. Since then, selected members have generously contributed items from their private libraries to form a collection of classic monographs in the neurosciences, supplementing a very rich collection already owned by the Becker Library. Most of the volumes accepted for this collection predate the founding of the Academy and the contemporary period of medical publishing.
AAN Library Collection in the Becker Library
The American Academy of Neurology Library Collection was established by the History of Neurology Section of the Academy in 1994. An agreement between the Academy and the Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University School of Medicine made it possible for the collection to be housed as part of the holdings of Becker Library in St. Louis, in the Library’s state of the art facility.
The collection presently comprises more than 3,000 books, including classic monographs and textbooks on neurology, anatomical atlases of the nervous system, and numerous editions of works by authors such as Jean Martin Charcot, S. Weir Mitchell, Thomas Willis, Charles Estienne, Santiago Ramón Y Cajal, Harvey Cushing, etc. These rare and valuable volumes – together with important reprints, journal articles, facsimiles, a few photographs, and a unique three-dimensional brain model – form one of the nine rare book collections of the Becker Library. In addition to the major fields of neurology and the neurosciences, some of the related disciplines, such as neurological surgery and psychiatry, and some of the distant predecessors of neurology, such as phrenology, are also represented.
