George Homan Papers

Historical Note

George Homan (1846-1928) graduated from Missouri Medical College in 1873.  From 1886 to 1893, he was Professor of Hygiene and Forensic Medicine at St. Louis Medical College.  Afterwards he became the Chief Sanitary Officer for St. Louis Health Department from 1893 to 1915.  During his tenure, his position was upgraded to that of City Health Commissioner.  He was a member of the St. Louis Medical Society, and its President in 1906.

Gifts of George Homan to St. Louis Medical History Club, the Saint Louis Medical Society and Washington University Medical School.  Part of the Homan Papers was the gift of the Saint Louis Medical Society, 1990. See individual series and items for details.

Physicians’ petitions and other documents relating to the effort of the Medical Profession of Missouri to secure the enactment of legislation for the establishment of a State Sanatorium for Consumptives during the session of the 42nd General Assembly, 1903. Note: This bound volume includes documents, correspondence, petitions, and memoranda. This movement originated by action of the Medical Society of City Hospital alumni and the St. Louis Medical Society respectively in 1901 and 1902. This volume was presented to the St. Louis Medical History Club in April 1914 by Dr. George Homan. Accession 90-061.
