Historical Note
Eunice Harriet Sanders, 1887-1984, was born Eunice Holmes in Nevada, Missouri. After completing her nurses’ training at Wesley Hospital in Kansas City, Holmes worked as a Red Cross nurse in Unit 2, Kansas City Emergency Detachment. She was transferred to Base Hospital 21 in St. Louis on May 5, 1917. When the United States became more actively involved World War I, members of Base Hospital 21 were called to duty. Less than two months after President Wilson declared war on Germany, the entire staff of Base Hospital 21 set sail for Europe on May 19, 1917. Holmes, along with the rest of the doctors and nurses of Base Hospital 21, was stationed in Rouen, France, located approximately 82 miles northwest of Paris. Holmes served as a Red Cross nurse from June 1917 to the end of 1918. After the war, she returned to Kansas City and worked as a public health nurse and later married Jean Sanders.
