HIPAA Resources at Washington University
While HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations are often associated with patient care, it is important to remember that these regulations also apply to research and education activities. Published works and/or teaching practices must comply with the HIPAA privacy and security polices that are in place here at Washington University School of Medicine.
When publishing works that contain patient health information, including images, necessary forms must be signed and properly maintained. These forms, as well as the guidelines for using them, can be found on the HIPAA Website.
Certain regulations also apply to patient health information that is used for teaching. Patient health information can be used for teaching and training of Washington University School of Medicine’s workforce and students. However if this same information is to be used outside of this function then proper authorization must be given by the patient. Some examples of outside uses include conferences, publications, or websites.
