Scholarly Communications at Becker Medical Library
Becker Library is committed to enhancing the opportunities for our faculty, scientists and students to participate in and be informed about the scholarly communications process. Among the services and resources we provide and projects we are involved in are:
- Providing third party submitter services to help WU authors comply with the NIH Public Access Policy. These services are available to all authors from Washington University.
- Designating a Scholarly Communications Specialist at Becker Library. The Scholarly Communications Specialist will provide personalized presentations to your department or program at Becker or at a location of your choice or visit you for a personal consultation on any of the issues related to Scholarly Communications. Our specialist will provide information on any issue you or your group would like to learn more about.
- Hosting DSpace, our institutional digital repository. DSpace at Becker Library will accept pre-prints, post-prints, posters, departmental newsletters, departmental histories, student papers, conference proceedings, and other works. Many publishers will allow for deposit of your published works. Consult Sherpa-RoMEO to view what publishers allow. For more information on DSpace, please contact Betsy Kelly, Associate Director for Digital Initiatives.
- Collaborating with the Danforth campus libraries on scholarly communications related projects.
- Adding open access peer reviewed journals that are indexed by PubMed to our catalog. Open access journals are freely available to anyone without a subscription.
- Increasing awareness for authors as to author rights by providing a publication amendment to allow authors to retain copyrights.
- Advocacy and outreach efforts include an Advisory Panel composed of librarians, faculty and administrators. For more information contact our Scholarly Communications Specialist.
- Developing services and resources in support of authors. We also provide hands on workshops, customized classes and personalized support. Our job is to make your job easier.
- Creation and management of specialized listings of publications for School of Medicine departments to track their publications. See example: Recent PubMed Publications from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences or see Recent PubMed Publications from the School of Medicine Faculty.
- Collection management projects include joining in consortiums, purchasing in bundles, sharing costs with the Danforth campus Libraries and performing analysis of our journal collection.
- Purchasing resources that promote seamless dissemination of information resources. Many of our digital resources are connected to each other to allow for linking to full text sources and for accessibility beyond the WU network. We recognize that many of our users work from their home or other remote locations and one of our major efforts is seeking solutions to enhance access without undue barriers.
- Membership to open access publishers that allow for discounts on manuscript submission fees for Washington University authors, BioMed Central and PLoS (Public Library of Science).
- Preserving and making permanently accessible the intellectual assets created by Washington University or those scholarly resources that we’ve invested our expenditures in, for our users by implementing programs and strategies to ensure permanent and stable access from within our network domain.
