About Access Restrictions to Electronic Resources

Access and use of electronic resources made available by the Becker Medical Library are governed by license agreements between the School of Medicine and publishers or third parties. Several of the electronic resources carry some restriction on their use. Access may be restricted by user location, number of concurrent users, and/or password.

In short, most people experience access limitations based on the network to which their computer is connected. Below is a quick breakdown of what can be accessed from various networks.

Access American Academy of Pediatrics Journals anywhere from your mobile device

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now offers an app that allows readers to access popular journals, like Pediatrics, from their mobile devices. After the mobile device has been authenticated (using the steps below), users can access AAP journals covered by Becker Library’s subscriptions from anywhere, on or off network. Becker subscribes to the following AAP publications: Pediatrics, Hospital Pediatrics, Neoreviews, Pediatrics in Review, AAP Grand Rounds, and AAP News.

Here are the instructions for accessing the AAP Journal app and authenticating your device. Note that you must be on the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) internet network during the authentication process.

If you are on your mobile device:

  1. Download the AAP Journals app from iTunes or Google Play (Android devices), then open the app.
  2. Open the journal you would like to access (you should see a list of available journals)
  3. Go to “Settings” (gear icon at top of page)
  4. Select “Authorize this device”
  5. Select “Enable Institutional Proxy”
  6. Fill out and submit the form (use WUSTL/WUSM email address)
  7. Once the form is accepted, a cookie will be placed on the device providing access for 6 months.
  8. Repeat the same process for all journals you would like to access via your mobile device.

If you are not on your mobile device (using a computer)

  1. From your computer (connected to the WUSM network) go to to request a proxy string.
  2. Download the AAP Journals app and open the app (iTunes or Google Play)
  3. Open the journal you would like to access
  4. Go to “Settings” (gear icon at the top of the page)
  5. Select “Authorize this device”
  6. Select “Apply Institutional Proxy” and enter proxy string obtained from the AAP website (step 1)
  7. Once the proxy string is provided, a cookie will be placed on the device providing access for 6 months.

After completing these steps you should be able to access AAP journals from anywhere with your mobile device. You will need to repeat the authentication process with your device every 6 months to maintain access.
