Becker Library Travel Scholarship Awarded

Justin Barr, MD, PhDThe Becker Medical Library travel scholarship for Spring 2017 was recently awarded to Justin Barr, MD, PhD.

Barr will visit the library in July to research the history of arterial repair, focusing on identifying certain surgical techniques that were learned during wartime and later became standard in surgical education. This work builds on his doctoral dissertation, "Surgical Repair of the Arteries in War and Peace, 1880-1960."

In his research, Barr will utilize the library’s General Hospital 21 collection, the Evarts Graham Papers, and several other collections in the Archives and Rare Books Division.

Barr earned a bachelor's degree in history from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006, a doctorate in history from Yale University in 2014, and a medical doctorate from the University of Virginia in 2015. He is currently a surgical resident at Duke University.
