About Access Restrictions to Electronic Resources

Access and use of electronic resources made available by the Becker Medical Library are governed by license agreements between the School of Medicine and publishers or third parties. Several of the electronic resources carry some restriction on their use. Access may be restricted by user location, number of concurrent users, and/or password.

In short, most people experience access limitations based on the network to which their computer is connected. Below is a quick breakdown of what can be accessed from various networks.

Ingenuity Pathways Analysis (IPA) 5.0 Seminar and Training - February 12 & 13, 2008

As of September 15, 2008, Becker Library no longer supports IPA. MetaCore from GeneGo is available through the Library for data mining and pathway analysis. Please see the MetaCore registration page for more information.

The IPA Seminar and Workshops have been canceled. Flights into St. Louis have been canceled due to inclement weather in St. Louis and the western United States. The seminar and hands-on workshop sessions will be re-scheduled.


Becker Medical Library is pleased to announce that professionals from Ingenuity Systems will be on campus February 12 and 13, 2008 to conduct comprehensive training on Ingenuity Pathways Analysis 5.0. A training seminar will be presented on Tuesday morning, February 12, 2008. There will be hands-on workshops held on Tuesday afternoon, February 12th and Wednesday morning, February 13th.

This seminar and workshop were rescheduled from the originally planned October 2007 dates. Registrants from last fall have already filled the Tuesday afternoon hands-on workshop session. A limited number of seats remain for the Wednesday morning hands-on workshop.

Ingenuity Pathways Analysis (IPA) is a web-based application that helps scientists perform research by providing context of biological pathways, cellular functions, metabolomics, toxicology, and biomarkers. Starting from a single gene, phenotype, disease or large dataset with IPA, you can:

  • Gain context and knowledge of a small number of genes/proteins and their interactions with other genes/proteins and chemical compounds based on current, cited scientific literature.
  • Better understand the results of large scale data analyses by clearly and reliably identifying the pathways, molecular mechanisms, and biological processes most relevant to experimental data.
  • Quickly identify and prioritize the most relevant and promising molecular biomarker candidates for a disease or treatment.
  • Analyze experimental data in the context of toxicity functions to deliver a focused, summarized output of toxicology and safety data for compounds.
  • Extract rich pathway information from metabolomics data. Overcome the metabolomics data analysis challenge by gaining the critical biological context necessary to gain biological insight into cell physiology and metabolism from metabolite data.
  • Communicate results and share insights with project teams and collaborators.

Who should attend: We encourage all scientists to attend this free seminar on how to gain a better biological context of results and extend research using IPA. Advance registration is requested, but not required.

Who should attend: Both new and advanced IPA users can advance their capability, insights, and confidence when using IPA to address specific research needs (e.g. disease, biomarkers, toxicology, drug targets).

Only 20 computers are available in the computer lab sessions, so registration is mandatory for computer lab access. Participants must attend the Tuesday morning seminar session as a prerequisite to the Hands-on Workshop. You may sit in and listen to the instructor during the computer laboratory demonstration without a reservation.
