About Access Restrictions to Electronic Resources

Access and use of electronic resources made available by the Becker Medical Library are governed by license agreements between the School of Medicine and publishers or third parties. Several of the electronic resources carry some restriction on their use. Access may be restricted by user location, number of concurrent users, and/or password.

In short, most people experience access limitations based on the network to which their computer is connected. Below is a quick breakdown of what can be accessed from various networks.

OvidSP to Replace Ovid Web Gateway on February 4, 2008

Ovid released a new interface called OvidSP (Ovid SilverPlatter) last October. Becker Medical Library encourages you to try the new interface by signing into it from the Library web site QuickLinks drop down menu, following the link that says Ovid (New).

OvidSP Interface

Key features of the new interface include:

  • Natural language searching across all resources with relevancy-ranked results
  • Alerts with RSS functionality
  • Ability to annotate records with your own comments

Searchers familiar with the old Ovid Web Gateway interface can continue to access its features on the Ovid Syntax tab of the new OvidSP interface. The old interface will be retired February 4, 2008. For more information about Ovid accounts at Becker, please visit http://beckerweb.wustl.edu/services/accounts/index.html.

Ovid is offering "Introduction to OvidSP" online classes designed for novice users or experienced users who may need to refresh basic skills. The course highlights the features and functionality of the OvidSP interface including: NLP and Syntax searching, Search Aid, Linking to Full Text, RSS feeds and Search Result Management Tools. For a schedule of classes, go to http://www.ovid.com/site/trial/ovidsp_intro/index.jsp.

Becker Library will gladly provide assistance with the new OvidSP interface, including helping faculty integrate the new features when writing assignments. Please contact the library at 314-362-7085 or e-mail AskBecker@wustl.edu.
