Annual Display of Rare Anatomical Texts

Becker Library’s Archives and Rare Books Division hosts the Annual Display of Rare Anatomical Texts in a virtual format.

Our largest exhibit of the year is a unique opportunity to see a selection of spectacular medical works dating from the Renaissance to the 20^th century up close, including:

• Albrecht Dürer. Della simmetria de I corpi humani. Venice, Domenico Nicolini, 1591. The German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer was one of the most renowned artists of the Northern Renaissance. In this work, he used diagrams of the human form to illustrate his thoughts on the connection between proportions and beauty.
• Albertus de Orlamünde. Philosophia pauperum. Venice: Georgium de Arriuabenis, 1496. One of the oldest books in our collections, this work’s depiction of the brain’s three ventricles sheds light on early modern conceptions of neuroanatomy.
• Jean-Galbert Salvage. Anatomie du gladiateur combatant. Paris: Chez l’auteur, de l’imprimerie de Mame, 1813. This large-scale atlas uses beautiful anatomical sketches to illustrate the movement of the body.
