Professor Nolan's grandfather, James F. Nolan, MD, was a 1938 graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine who was an important member of the radiation safety group of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos during World War II. Notably, James F. Nolan, MD, escorted the Little Boy bomb from Los Alamos to Tinian Island and was part of the first group of doctors and physicists to enter Hiroshima immediately after Japan's surrender.

Last year, Professor Nolan published the book, Atomic Doctors: Conscience and Complicity at the Dawn of the Nuclear Age, in which he recounts his grandfather’s experiences and comments on the moral and medical issues arising out of the atomic age.
