When we browse the selection of books at a bookstore or a library, the covers are often meant to give us an idea of what kind of a story a particular book wants to tell. Books published during the early modern period might not have had the eye-catching designs that adorn 20th and 21st century paperbacks and dust jackets, but they had their own methods of providing visual summaries of a work’s contents. This digital session explores how the elaborate title pages and frontispieces in Renaissance books were not just designed to be beautiful works of art, but also to provide coded clues regarding the text itself.
