Measurement instruments are defined by the Health and Psychosocial Instruments Database (HaPI) as questionnaires, psychological tests, health status indicators, genetic tests, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/ manuals, inventories, rating scales, projective techniques, and vignettes/scenarios.

An example of a measurement instrument is the Glaucoma 5-Year Risk Estimator, developed by the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS), for assessing the risk of developing primary open angle glaucoma.

Assessment

Documentation by research study investigators of new measurement instruments developed as a result of the research study is recommended for tracking of research output.

Search Tip Search using the keywords, title or the name of the author/research study.

Some resources that may be helpful in locating measurement instruments include the following:

CINAHL Plus

CINAHL Plus provides indexing for 3,802 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health, with indexing back to 1937. CINAHL Plus also contains searchable cited references for more than 1,270 journals. Full text material includes nearly 80 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.

CINAHL Plus offers a Publication Type filter on the main search page that allows for searching of Questionnaire/Scale or Research Instrument. Use the Control (Ctrl) key to select both.

ETS Test Link Overview

The ETS Test Link Overview is a library of more than 25,000 tests and other measurement devices that makes information on standardized tests and research instruments available to researchers, graduate students, and teachers. Collected from the early 1900s to the present, the Test Collection at ETS is the largest such compilation in the world. The tests in this collection were acquired from a variety of U.S. publishers and individual test authors. Foreign tests are also included in the collection, including some from Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI) is a major database that provides ready access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/ manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, and in psychosocial sciences. Coverage is from 1985 to the present. Follow directions for searching as noted.

National Quality Measures Clearinghouse

National Quality Measures Clearinghouse (NQMC), sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is a public repository for evidence-based quality measures and measure sets.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO covers psychology and related fields and contains journal articles, chapters, books, dissertations and reports from 1887 to the present.

PsycINFO offers a search option for searching of Tests and Measures as a search filter. From the main page, select “TM” from the Select a Field drop down menu box.
