Becker Medical Library will host a pop-up exhibit of "50×50: Recovering the Classics," a crowd-sourced collection of cover artwork of famous books that promotes interest in classical literature to a new generation. Twenty posters will be on display at the School of Medicine from January 6 through January 27, 2017 – in Becker Medical Library and in FLTC from January 6 through January 13, 2017. This 50 x 50 Missouri project was student-initiated and is supported by Washington University Libraries. Many of the works in the 50×50 Missouri project were created by Washington University students, faculty and local artists.
50 x 50 Missouri is part of a national initiative announced by the White House to promote interest in classical literature to a new generation of young readers. Local artists are invited to create new covers for some of the greatest works of literature in the public domain. The initiative aims to involve all 50 states in its effort, hence Washington University Libraries’ 50 x 50 Missouri. Other organizations supporting this initiative includes the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Digital Public Library of America, New York Public Library and FirstBook.
50 x 50 Missouri exhibit features 20 works created by Washington University students, faculty and local artists. The full set of national works can be viewed at the Recovering the Classics database, which includes works by artists throughout the country.
