Becker Medical Library and Washington University Libraries are pleased to announce a new Publish and Read agreement for journals published by the Microbiology Society. The agreement allows Washington University corresponding authors a full waiver of Article Processing Charges (APCs) to publish their works under a Creative Commons (CC-BY) Open Access license as of January 1, 2022. The agreement places no limits on the number of works published by the university or authors. The agreement also allows full access to all the journals published by the Microbiology Society dating from 1947 for reading and text/data mining.
The Microbiology Society is a membership charity based in Europe for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. The six journals published by the Microbiology Society are:
- Journal of General Virology
- Journal of Medical Microbiology
- Microbial Genomics
- International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology
- Access Microbiology

This type of ‘transformative’ publishing agreement is indicative of a trend among academic libraries and represents our own libraries’ commitment to leveraging our purchasing power with publishers to the benefit of our institutional authors.
