Better Balance for Life

This book describes simple and practical ways to improve core strength and balance doing routine daily activities. It also provides a pathway for progress as you improve. Activities can be performed at home without any special equipment. I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my aging parents!

The Complete Maus

Art Spiegelman masterfully uses symbolism in the graphic novel The Complete Maus: A Survivor’s Tale to depict not only his father’s experience as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust but the lasting intergenerational trauma that follows. Maus is truly a classic and a great entry point for those interested in exploring heavier content in graphic novel format.

Slavery at Sea: Terror, Sex, and Sickness in the Middle Passage

The book Slavery at Sea is an interesting study with primarily written sources from captors about the slave trade and its gritty and complex history. The book takes a unique structure. Instead of providing a chronological series of dates from the 1600s to the 1800s, this book focuses more on the journey those being enslaved and the enslavers took. The first few chapters deal with Europeans sailing to Africa and the process of making contacts with Africans to purchase slaves in this continent. The middle chapters discuss the passage across the Atlantic itself and stories about this journey. The last part of the book discusses the selling of the slaves once they reach their destination, and the process behind crews preparing enslaved Africans for sale. While difficult to read in spots, it is an introspective and well-researched look into this topic which still impacts the modern world.

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

The Body Keeps the Score discusses the oft neglected intersection between mental and physical health, providing an insightful look at how the stress of emotional trauma can lead to chronic pain and disease.

An Unquiet Mind

For an open and honest portrayal of madness, bipolar disorder in particular, this autobiographical tale by a psychiatrist is commendable.  Dr. Jamison story is unique and well said. This book is helpful for those who have an interest in the dynamics of bipolar disorder, whether from a personal or clinical perspective.

The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease and Other Dementias

This is an invaluable book for family members and caregivers of persons with dementia. It is a book I consulted on numerous occasions when taking care of my mother with Alzheimer’s. It has long been considered the ultimate guide and is now available in a 7th edition.
