Do you know the story about Orpheus’ descent into the underworld, or Mercury battling the many-eyed giant Argus Panoptes? Are you intrigued by the sea monsters that populate early modern maps, and do you wonder if maybe, just maybe, unicorns are real? Then come to the Rare Books Reading Room on Friday, March 1, to learn about the gods and monsters that lurk in our collections! We’ll be showing off some of our early modern books that contain illustrations of classical deities and fantastic beasts: a spectacular array of Gods and Monsters.
